About this deal

Born into Evangelical trailer trash poverty, Aurora finds her way into an elite prep school where she’s drawn into a circle of girls who form a Surrealist coven. I legitimately teared up at the end, as Ship begins its glorious last run, its final calculations as it travels an impossible path.

He wasn’t content to create his art and let the viewer define meaning; he wants to control the reader’s conclusions.

It was difficult at times to keep a sense of the timeline - things didn't seem to have moved on but we know months had passed due to the growing of vegetables.

I tried to stay patient, though character and language are two components key to keeping me intrigued. Robinson is an acknowledged sf master-his Mars trilogy and his stand-alone novel 2312 (2012) were multiple award winners and nominees-and this latest novel is sure to be a big hit with devoted fans of old-school science fiction. There’s Aurora, the crew’s best possible shot–a water world and Earth analog, with the right composition, mass, and likelihood of supporting Terran organisms. It felt like Aurora was so busy trying to do a family drama, that we just miss out on any sort of character depth. Some of the films he's both written and directed are "Stir of Echoes," "Secret Window," "Ghost Town," and "Premium Rush. The Gods We Can Touch is a unique and immersive treasure trove for fans, which will be published as a beautifully presented cloth-bound hardcover.

Let me start this review by saying that in spite of the two star rating, I believe this is an important novel that every science fiction fan needs to read. Overall, this was an easy enough read (once you get past the science) but the theme of the book gets lost in the story about the family. Alongside the book, Aurora is also releasing a special edition vinyl version of The Gods We Can Touch. But the story isn't concerned with the ensuing worldwide chaos but deals with a handful of related but estranged core characters in a pair of different locations. Ship manages to safely drop its humans off on a pass of Earth but fails to make a final gravity slowdown past the Sun. The author has a pessimistic view of the universe, what can go wrong will, people are unreliable, conflicts entirely predictable. Section Three centers on arriving at their new home, and it is here that Freya takes a background role as we focus on Euan, one of her childhood friends that is planet-side. What happens next is an experience I can only describe in feelings: exhilaration at the passengers’ arrival in the new system; incredulity at what they discover after making planetfall; sorrow at the way these new developments tear the ship’s community apart.
