About this deal

And if not, The Art of Eric Carle will make converts: it presents the full sweep of the German-born artist’s work, from juvenilia, early posters and commercial art to the radiant color and strong shapes of his children’s book illustrations. We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. This is a delightful delicious book - full of coloured illustrations and a wonderful discussion about his life.

His artwork was created as collage, using hand-painted papers, which he cut and layered to form bright and colourful images. Designed for classroom teachers, librarians, art teachers, and others interested in engaging students in the visual arts and the art of the book, the Museum's professional development programs emphasize teaching through the arts and encourage critical and creative thinking.Using simple words and universal themes like friendship and finding one's place in the world, Carle's work shows a reverence for nature, and a deep respect for the emergent readers for whom he was writing. With an extensive collection of more than 106,000 rare and unique volumes relating to the history of art, the Jean Outland Chrysler Art Library is one of the most significant art libraries in the South.

The book also contains an insightful autobiography illustrated with personal photographs, an anecdotal essay by his longtime editor, a photographic essay on how Carle creates his collages, and writings by Carle and his colleagues. An agreeable overview of Carle’s life and work, a consideration of the genesis of his ideas, a look at how he fashions his collages, and admiring words from some of his colleagues. For some retrospect, this book is up there in popularity with The Hobbit, The Catcher in the Rye, and dare I say, the Harry Potter series. Also, for those interested in making similar art there is a gatefold section in the middle of the book about how to collage and make your own tissue paper. After he came up with an idea of specific illustrations he wanted to create, he'd draw them on tracing paper and overlay that on top of just the right piece of tissue paper.

The creator of more than 70 picture books, he combined winsome stories and exuberant collages that appeal to young readers and adults alike.

And I think that Eric Carle was a person who listened to children and influenced them to tell stories of their own. Paddle pop sticks, a few clean milk plastic bottles, plastic forks, small pieces of corrugated cardboard, plastic take away food containers with lids, newspapers and others, (see list on art materials and equipment).
