About this deal

The "Kennerspiel des Jahres 2016" promo tile was given out to celebrate the winning of the "Kennerspiel" award in 2016. Pandemic: Legacy soared to the top of the Board Game Geek charts and stayed there representing as it does the current pinnacle of the exotic legacy game. Isle of Skye, in its unassuming package, took me by surprise and is without question one of my favorite games from 2015.

In Isle of Skye, there is tile laying, to be sure, and it is important, but it’s not necessarily the most important. After some donkey’s years since the last time I played Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King, this game at last hit our table one more time. If we don’t have a game you are looking for it please contact us and we will do our best to help you. But if the money scoring condition is on the table, players might be more frugal, trying to earn the points it provides. They mention that it's a great game with plenty of playability, and the randomly chosen tiles and goals make good repeat play.

Isle of Skye is one of the most beautiful places in the world, with soft sand beaches, gently sloping hills, and impressive mountains. I’m Scottish (you may have noticed) and this misty eyed romanticism of my homeland is not new to me. They mention that it is not too complex, it is easy for any player to pick up, and it isn't difficult to teach. In the end, the player with the best kingdom, and not the richest player, becomes the sovereign of the island. To succeed in the Isle of Skye, players must try to work with and prepare for the scoring tiles that will trigger each round. In the end, the player with the best kingdom—and not the richest player—becomes the sovereign of the island. First of all, you draw four random scoring tiles from the box and you place them on the scoring track.

These award 1 victory point each for broch, cattle, farm, lighthouse, each pair of sheep, each pair of ships, and each pair of whiskey barrels. Yes, all of those things are true, but Isle of Skye is actually a great game so it’s okay to look past all of this.Isle of Skye is also a spatial game, which means that mental rotation is a necessary skill for playing.

At the end of the auction phase of the game comes the tile laying phase where you can lay any tiles you have bought or have remaining in your hand unpurchased by your opponents. I would closely compare this to Carcassonne (as the classic tile laying game), but here rather being limited to placing a meeple on the tile you lay, you are able to build for multiple strategies each round. Everyone then places the tiles they ended up with, trying to build an island compatible with the scoring criteria set up at the beginning as well as one likely to generate sufficient income to offer fiscal flexibility in future turns.Players score victory points by fulfilling objectives on scoring tiles, from coins, and from fulfilling objectives on scrolls.
