About this deal

But to be honest, I think living with those questions would have been more satisfying than having to endure The Family Remains. I immensely enjoyed the “Samuel” chapters, as he is so good at connecting the dots and laying out the investigation for readers.

I didn’t decide until halfway through to send Lucy after him, but realized their stories needed to align more closely as the book developed. Despite him not being massively likeable, I still really felt for him because his childhood and adolescence must have been utter hell, so is it any wonder he has turned into the complex person he is today? A terrific and engrossing continuation of this fascinatingly creepy, mysterious and oddly entertaining family saga. I did not have time to read the first book again before I got to the sequel, so please keep that in mind when reading my review. The only interesting (though immensely unlikeable) character in this story is Henry whose obsession with Phin is the only engaging part of the narrative but only up to a point because after all that build-up, the climax will either have you rolling your eyes and/or laughing at its absurdity and/or throwing the book at the nearest wall in frustration (please take care not to do that if you’re using your e-reader, it’s not worth it!

I also found myself getting a little emotional near the end, I really liked how Jewell wrapped this up, although it may not be to everyone’s tastes. Jewell keeps his sketchy nature in this story as well which adds to the unnerving feeling of this thriller.

It was almost impossible for me to remember the characters from The Family Upstairs and to also remember all of the crazy, immoral things that went on. You don't have to read The Family Upstairs as there are a lot of backstories that I think you can piece together about what happened. I think I enjoyed this one a touch more than the first one but to be honest this one is not a favourite either. We also see how deep the relationship is between Lucy and Henry, how they work within their damaged psyches to be there for one another. The Family Remains will give readers closure on what happens next and lets us see how the survivors are coping.

Rachel “stared blankly for a moment toward the window, where the summer sun was leaking through the edges of the blind. Trouble starts even before the honeymoon is over, and Rachel realizes the man she has married has a very dark side. She stared blankly for a moment toward the window, where the summer sun was leaking through the edges of the blind. Lucy had plans of finding a home of her own somewhere close to Libby that she, Marco and Stella could live in. And as I told, the bones of a young woman found in Thames and another murder case in France may be linked to the Lamb siblings!

I had mentioned her so fleetingly in the first novel that I felt like she was just waiting to be brought fully to life and I wouldn’t know who she was or what her marriage had been like until I started writing her. The Family Remains takes place directly after the events from its predecessor, but also provides readers with alternate timelines and point of views to wrap up the next installment of a severely damaged family. Libby and Miller are preparing to fly to Botswana, with Henry insisting he tag along, when they receive word that Phin has left and disappeared into thin air again. Lisa Jewell has proven time and time again what a master plotter and storyteller she is, and this book didn’t drop a stitch in its presentation of details that were necessary and moved the story forward. The remains of Birdie Dunlop-Evers (one of the cult follows who abused Henry, Lucy, Phil, and his sister Clemency) have also been discovered by police, put there by Henry, who killed Birdie twenty-six years ago in self-defence to protect baby Serenity/Libby. I will include posts on upcoming books to help readers keep abreast of new publications and their dates. Now, it's just the police trying to piece together the last parts, but even that wasn't too surprising.
