About this deal

It’s a moment of grace and vindication, one that Logan lets the long-suffering Lux experience utterly, triumphantly alone. Kirsty Logan shows the limited choices left to these women, and draws the reader into their struggles to take control of their own lives. For Lux and Else trail the weighty plumes of traumatic pasts, which Logan skilfully offers us in passages of backstory that sing, screech and skip through the novel in the way records are marked by jagged scratches. Not even to mention the beautiful circularity of the story, and the way that shards from the first page fall into place and are mirrored once we reach the ending.

Some of the writing is beautiful, some is what I guess is 'stream of consciousness'; interesting, but too long and it gets a bit tiresome. But, on the off chance you have no clue what I’m rattling on about, all I can say is, read this book to find out. The plot was so compelling, the pacing perfect, it just flowed beautifully, exactly what I’d expect from Kirsty Logan and her skilful writing. In rich and immersive prose Kirsty Logan conjures a world of violence and beauty in which women grasp at power through witchcraft and poisons, through sexuality and childbearing, through performance and pretence, and most of all through throwing other women to the wolves. It’s also about ghosts, grief, poisons and nature, motherhood, love in all its different forms and learning to trust in life again.I really enjoyed this creeping, sinister tale of witchcraft, such a hugely satisfying read, a kind of fantasy history, full of complex, powerful, women. As a lover of witches, female rage, revenge murder, gender neutrality, matriarchy, and the word ‘cunt,’ this was good as hell. i don't know why the author felt the need to mention fecal matters so many times but it felt extremely out of place. In the harsh world of Now She Is Witch, which would seem to be some version of medieval Europe, most girls and women are possessions for men either to harm or play with.

We join her story when her mother dies suddenly and she almost ends with the same fate as the angry mob-like villagers forcing her out of her home by committing the only thing which is imaginable in the cruelty of that era; arson. So, yes, it’s a story of power and its warping, but also of love and courage and wisdom and beauty and a magic that runs deep in the earth. Now She Is Witch is a beautiful and twisted dark tale of feminine power in a time when a woman with power was deemed to be in league with the devil. It will definitely go down as one of my top reads of the year, and possibly one of my all-time favourites too.
