About this deal

My conclusion after the testing with the Aeropex – this is simply not true. You can enjoy your music on it, at least I did. Our open-ear design, powered by bone conduction technology, allows for total awareness of surroundings and bud-free, comfortable listening. If you’re looking for headphones that are primed for getting sweaty with and you don’t want to drown out the world, the Shokz OpenRun are currently your best option behind the newer and upgraded Shokz OpenRun Pro. Nevertheless, if you're looking for a set of bone conduction headphones for longer runs and rides, we'd seriously recommend considering the older Trekz Air over the OpenMove. If you’ll mostly be wearing them while running and won’t have the volume cranked too high, the vibration of the older headset is unlikely to be an issue and we've found its softer, more ergonomic design comfortable enough to wear all day long.

Shokz AU | Professional Bone Conduction Sports Headphones

Forget, for a moment, the AfterShokz Titanium’s bone conduction claims; being able to hear your surroundings while you listen to music makes this a genuinely interesting product. But is open-ear enough? There is undeniably plenty of room for things to get better as that bone conduction tech improves, both in bass and clarity, but the differences between the Trekz Air and the OpenRun are noticeable. If you're not sold on bone conduction headphones and simply need a way to listen to music as you run or workout, then take a look at the Beats PowerBeats Pro instead. They offer a fantastic and comfortable fit—even when you're pounding the pavement—and great sound. As for the microphone, perfect for making calls and talking without holding a phone. I highly recommend. Ultimately, is the AfterShokz Headphones “good enough”? I wouldn’t say the Aeropex is anything groundbreaking from their previous models but it is certainly the best model now. Fortunately, that’s not been the case with the OpenRun, and there hasn't been any worrying signs of wear. Though for peace of mind, we’d suggest placing them in the accompanying case as opposed to simply slinging them in your gym bag to make sure they do go the distance.

If you haven’t tried a bone conduction headphones before, I implore you to try one if you ever have the chance. My first time was magical and the reaction was consistent with a couple of my friends.

The Shokz OpenRun are the best bone conduction headphones you can buy

Controlling the AfterShokz Titanium is also a cinch, with one of the component boxes on the headband hosting volume buttons, one of which doubles as a long-press on/off switch. Next to that is a micro USB slot for recharging … and here comes a problem. At just six hours charge, the AfterShokz Titanium is immediately relegated from a pair of do-it-all headphones to a product that really should be thought of as single-activity, and that’s a shame. We realise ‘true wireless’ earphones have a worse problem, but that doesn’t make a six-hour battery acceptable. We liked The AfterShokz Titanium may be primarily designed for the gym, and for jogs and runs outdoors, but we've zero interest in buying a different pair of headphones for every occasion. The AfterShokz Titanium needs to do it all, so we took them on a walk through a busy city centre. In case you don't know what a bone-conduction headphone is, it's one that delivers sound through your cheekbones. That's right: From a design point of view, big strides have been made from the Air and those first generation Shokz headphones. They feel nicer to wear and the shrink in size does make a difference from a comfort point of view. As we said, bone conduction technology remains at the heart of how Shokz delivers audio, in a way that doesn’t entirely distract you from the world around you.

Support – Shokz

But there are plenty of situations where I wouldn’t want to be using it like on a noisy transit, running beside a noisy road, etc. For those situations, I prefer having my over-ear or in-ear headphones where it allows me to be in my blissfull little corner. So how do they sound? In a sentence; good enough for the gym or office, and much fuller than the Shokz Titanium, but not as good as a pair of regular headphones or earphones. These are best used with the headphones’ earplug mode, which lowers the volume reduces the bass significantly, compensating for the effect of closing your ear canals (sounds transmitted through bone conduction always sound deeper, and with earplugs you’re not hearing any ‘leaking’). Vocal booster mode, on the other hand, boosts the higher frequencies.

Right now, Shokz owns this space because there’s nothing really out there to give it some competition. Hopefully that’ll change in the future because there’s definitely an opportunity for others to push bone conduction tech even further. Also consider... With the first generation of Shokz, those issues were very prominent. You didn’t get a lot of power, they vibrated at higher volumes and they leaked a fair bit too. On the OpenRun, progress has certainly been made in some areas, but not in all. You are obviously not going to get the kind of results you’d expect from an in ear or over-ear headphones, but there are some noticeable improvements with the very gentle upping of bass, improved detail and overall upgrade in audio quality. Fully charges in an hour and a half, but a 15-minute charge provides enough boost to "get you through a long workout or marathon call" After using the Aeropex as my daily driver, I start to get the appeal. The build quality is great. The sound quality works well enough for me to get through my workouts. The comfort is top-notch. It kept my ears free from any physical intrusion.
