About this deal

Aleshia Jensen’s precise translation from the original French captures the nuances of how families talk to each other, alternating between sharpness and hilarity, as well as the cadences of small-town life. Her very first contribution to the graphic narrative world takes place in 2004, when her first comic is published; Une araignée, des tagliatelles et au lit, tu parles d´une vie. This work shows a firm experimental vocation, where Jourdy plays with the narrative possibilities of the media. Camille Jourdy is a writer and illustrator from France. Her other works include graphic novels Rosalie Blum and Les Vermeilles. She works with Moulin Roty, a toy company. ( From Drawn & Quarterly) Camille Jourdy’s marvellous new comic book begins with a train journey: a young woman, Juliette, is leaving Paris, and heading for the small town where she grew up. Exhausted by the city and the seething anxiety from which she has suffered ever since she was a girl, she longs for the awkward embrace of her somewhat complicated family: her divorcee father, now lonely enough to be on the dating apps; her mother, an amateur artist with bohemian leanings who has recently taken yet another younger lover; her older sister, Marylou, who though in possession of both a husband and two small children, is also having a one-day-a-week affair with a man who works in a fancy dress shop (he comes to her for joyful afternoon sex in her greenhouse, disguised as a bear, or a wolf, or a ghost).

Juliette • Montreal Review of Books

Most people look like they’re struggling with their weight; men are disinclined to shave but not quite ambitious enough to grow beards; smoking is seemingly required by law. The place to be, for many, is the local bar. Called Le Tropical, its ambience is as unlike a beach in Tahiti as could be imagined. But it is the neighbourhood nerve centre, practically the only informal gathering place in a setting that otherwise discourages such things.

Her sister, a caregiver and mother of two, is carrying on an elaborate affair with a man from a costume shop. Her parents, separated, are now estranged. Father is sure he’s developing Alzheimer’s, though it’s more likely that he’s simply getting old. Mother, on the other hand, revels in the second act of her life as a free woman, an artist with a show at their local gallery to prove it. Oh ! Oh ! It’s this second element that provides an indication of the other core themes of the book. Namely disappointment, the grief of dwindling dreams, the encroaching shadow of mortality and time passing. Or as Juliette and Polux allude to, the “tragic dimension.” While there is some crepuscular sadness here, the meat of the story is marbled with rich veins of humour, wonder and the loving touches that can only come from close observation. Shipments to the USA & Canada: Wordless and experimental, Joe Kessler’s “ The Gull Yettin” traces the disquieting connection between a young boy and the shape-shifting, birdlike creature that is obsessed with him. We follow the boy from the death of his family, through a perilous voyage across the water and into, for a time, the care of a woman who takes him in as if he were her own. The book is entitled Juliette, floating in the centre of the cover in a grassy clearing is a second, possibly alternative name: or, the Ghosts Return in the Spring. No he leído nada parecido a esto. Me encanta.
